Emulsion Transfer

Image Transfer

To create a Polaroid Image Transfer, the positive (photo) is discarded and the remaining negative is placed upon a "receptor site", such as a piece of high quality watercolor paper. The "image" of the photograph preserved in the dyes of the negative is thereby "transferred" onto the receptor site.

The result is a dream-like impressionistic "watercolor quality" image. An image transfer creation may then be further embellished by using a variety of additive color enhancements, such as watercolor pencils or oil pastels. Such embellishment contributes to the painterly quality of Elena's transfer images.

Emulsion Transfer

The Emulsion Transfer process involves carefully removing the photograph's thin emulsion from the film's backing and gently repositioning the emulsion onto a different receptor site. Elena uses both rag-cotton watercolor paper and canvas.

Elena invokes her creativity to manipulate the photographic image through stretching, pushing, pulling, or scrunching the photo emulsion. These manipulative distortions are the prime factor which create and give emulsion transfer art their unique and illusory appearance.
